Ensure both are seated, before closing and locking the battery compartment. When putting in the rechargeable battery, the notched side should be at the top. There you will see an open slot for a rechargeable GoPro Max battery, and a slot on the right side for the microSD. It has a small lever that you flip up to red, in order to unlock and open the flap.
